Appeal Court Sets Monday for Final Decision in Kano Governorship Dispute

The Abuja Appeal Court has scheduled a hearing for Monday regarding the appeal filed by Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) against his All Progressive Congress (APC) rival, Nasiru Yusuf Gawuna. Governor Yusuf is challenging the nullification of his election by the Kano Election Petition Tribunal. The tribunal, led by Justice Oluyemi Akintan Osadebay, declared 165,663 of Yusuf's votes invalid on September 20, 2023, stating that they were not signed or stamped by INEC (Independent National Electoral Commission). Governor Yusuf has criticized the verdict, calling it unfair and a miscarriage of justice. The parties involved in the case are Governor Yusuf, NNPP, APC, and INEC. Despite initially being declared the winner of the March 18, 2023 election with 1,019,602 votes, after the deduction of the 165,663 votes, Yusuf's tally was reduced to 853,939, which was 30,000 votes less than Gawuna's 890,705 votes. As a result, the court declared Gawuna the winner and ordered INEC to withdraw Yusuf's certificate.
