Exploring Diverse Views on Tinubu’s Approval of Oronsaye Report Implementation

A number of NGOs have called on the president to collaborate with the National Assembly in the application of a new report. The reactions were mixed following the Monday directive given by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu regarding the implementation of the modified Oronsaye report on civil service reforms. Many believe that the president should have involved the National Assembly before moving forward with the implementation.

In independent interviews with Daily Trust, three major NGOs expressed some hesitations regarding the president's actions. Executive Director of the Civil Society Legislative Advocacy Centre (CISLAC) and Transparency International-Nigeria, Malam Auwal Musa Rafsanjani, recognized the importance of the Oronsaye report implementation, however, he expressed concerns that President Tinubu is rushing this process without due consultation with the members of the National Assembly.

Rafsanjani emphasized the need for the president to adhere to constitutional and legislative procedures when merging or scrapping agencies, in order to maintain credibility and uphold the rule of law. Further, he asked the president to pay attention to the legal and political implications of taking such actions without proper engagement with the National Assembly.

The Executive Director of the Resource Centre for Human Rights and Civic Education (CHRICED), Comrade Ibrahim M. Zikirullahi, claimed that President Tinubu seems to lack clear strategies when dealing with Nigeria's problems. Zikirullahi suggested that for a positive outcome, it would be appropriate for the president to present his plans to the National Assembly for approval, even if they tend to agree with the president's proposals without scrutiny.

Similarly, Mr. Tunde Salman, the Team Lead/Convener, Good Governance Team (GGT) Nigeria, argued that the government must carefully consider the policy and develop appropriate implementation strategies, as many of these would need legislative action.
