Johann Rupert, a notable South African businessman, has maintained his position as Africa's wealthiest individual in 2024, surpassing Nigerian billionaire, Aliko Dangote. This information was divulged by Forbes Real-Time Billionaires, an index that keeps track of the day-to-day changes in the net worth of the world's wealthiest people.

Dangote, who is the founder of the Dangote Group conglomerate, dipped to second place after his fortune dropped from $13.5 billion in 2023 to $9.7 billion by Thursday, January 4, 2024, demonstrating a drop of $3.8 billion. In correspondence, Rupert's fortune diminished from $10.7 billion in 2023 to $10 billion in 2024.

Rupert, who is the chairman of the Swiss luxury goods company Compagnie Financiere Richemont, is known for his association with renowned brands like Cartier and Montblanc. The company, established in 1998, is an offshoot of assets owned by Rembrandt Group Limited (now known as Remgro Limited), a company founded by his father Anton in the 1940s.

Rupert owns 7% of the diversified investment company Remgro, where he is also the chairman, and holds a 26% stake in Reinet, an investment holding company situated in Luxembourg. He is a prominent critic of proposals to allow fracking in the Karoo region of South Africa, where he owns property.

In addition, Abdul Samad Rabiu, the chair of the BUA Group, and Mike Adenuga, the chairman of Globacom, also slipped positions on the billionaires list. Forbes' ranking reveals that Adenuga's wealth sharply declined from $6.3 billion in 2023 to $3.1 billion on Thursday, whereas Rabiu's wealth went up from $7.6 billion to $5.7 billion. As a result, Adenuga dropped from the 6th to the 10th position, and Rabiu shifted from the 4th to the 6th position.
