The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has announced that it is in the process of introducing Computer Based Testing (CBT) for its examinations. The Head of National Office (HNO), Mr Patrick Areghan, revealed this information in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Lagos on Saturday.

Areghan stated that the implementation of CBT has been a part of his vision for the council and significant progress has already been made towards this goal. However, he acknowledged that there are challenges associated with administering practical and essay papers through CBT, as it is more suitable for objective questions. Areghan highlighted the need for schools to have computer facilities and electricity, as well as the issue of handling theory and practical papers.

Areghan suggested that a segmented market approach could be adopted, where those schools unable to afford CBT will continue to use the traditional pencil and paper format. He expressed his hope that WAEC would eventually be able to conduct CBT examinations, even if it initially starts with objective questions.

In addition to the introduction of CBT, Areghan also emphasized his desire to see all operations of the council fully digitalized in the near future.
